Before booking your SMILE PRO surgery, it's important to know if you qualify. Here is the complete eligibility checklist that our surgeons use at Brar Eye Hospital.
SMILE PRO Eligibility Criteria - Quick Checklist
Your eyes must be fully developed. Best results for ages 18–45. Surgery after 40 is possible but discussed individually.
SMILE PRO corrects short-sightedness from -1 to -10. Also corrects astigmatism up to -5 Diopters.
Your glasses prescription should not have changed significantly in the past 12 months. Unstable power may return after surgery.
The cornea must be thick enough to safely reshape. Our pre-op exam measures this accurately.
No active keratoconus, glaucoma, severe dry eyes, or corneal infections at time of surgery.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect eye power. Surgery is postponed until after breastfeeding is complete.
Well-controlled diabetes is acceptable. Uncontrolled blood sugar can affect healing and results.
You should understand that SMILE PRO corrects most eyes to 6/6 or better, but results can vary slightly.
Who is NOT Eligible for SMILE PRO?
- Keratoconus (cone-shaped cornea) — SMILE PRO may worsen this condition
- Power below -1.00 or above -10.00 — Lens implant procedures may be recommended instead
- Age below 18 — Eyes are still developing
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding — Surgery postponed for safety
- Active eye infections or inflammation
- Very thin cornea (below 480 microns) — Not enough tissue to reshape safely
Even if you don't qualify for SMILE PRO, alternatives like Contoura Vision LASIK or ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) may be suitable. Our surgeons will recommend the best option for your eyes.
